Windows Subsystem for Linux

So this is pretty awesome:

The Windows Subsystem for Linux lets developers run a GNU/Linux environment – including most command-line tools, utilities, and applications – directly on Windows, unmodified, without the overhead of a virtual machine.

That’s some pretty cool and interesting effort by Microsoft. I’m very new to this and haven’t tried this myself, but this deserves some mentioning on the website.

The real benefit of using free software you can only get by using free software exclusively. That’s especially true for the firmware and operating system. Maybe you can get away with running a proprietary app in a container of some sort. So I don’t see the appeal of running free apps for GNU on a MS Windows machine. If your school or employer expects you to run MS Windows than that’s the issue you should approach and not sneakily run free software on it.
