Rethinking Debian for beginners – seeking community feedback

Hi everyone,

I wanted to open a discussion about our current recommendation list for new users on getgnulinux.org. We’ve been recommending Debian, Ubuntu, and Fedora as beginner-friendly distributions for Windows users making the switch to GNU/Linux. However, I’ve been rethinking the place of Debian on our list.

Over time, I’ve noticed that Debian, while rock-solid and popular among seasoned users, can present a steeper learning curve to beginners. Its focus on stability and flexibility sometimes comes at the expense of ease-of-use and user-friendly defaults, which are crucial for someone transitioning from Windows. In contrast, distributions like Linux Mint and Zorin OS tend to offer more streamlined, beginner-focused experiences out of the box.

It’s not just about the distribution itself though; have a look at Debian’s website and compare that to the website for Zorin OS, for example. To which website would you rather send a new user?

I’m aware that some in the community appreciate Debian for its robustness, customization options, and commitment to free software, but my concern is that these strengths might also be stumbling blocks for brand-new users who need a smoother introduction to GNU/Linux. The question then becomes: Should Debian remain on our recommended list for beginners, or is there a better, truly beginner-friendly alternative that still respects the spirit of GNU/Linux and Free Software?

I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences:

  • For those who’ve helped new users get started with Debian—what are your experiences?
  • Are there any other distributions (beyond Ubuntu, Fedora, or derivative distributions like Linux Mint) that you believe offer a compelling alternative for new GNU/Linux users while retaining the core values we care about?
  • Some GNU/Linux distributions are aimed particularly at making the transition from Windows (and other operating systems) as smooth as possible. Such is the case for Linux Mint and Zorin OS, for example, but these are both based on Ubuntu, and we already recommend Ubuntu.

My goal is to ensure our recommendations serve our audience’s needs as effectively as possible. Your insights and experiences are invaluable in helping shape the content we present. Whether you’ve had positive experiences with Debian as a starter OS or you agree with its shortcomings for beginners, please weigh in.
